Like many Algarvian resorts Armação de Pêra began life as a beach onto which fishing boats from a nearby village, in this case the village of Pêra, were drawn. Eventually a few shacks sprung up and it began to assume an independent status. With the tourism boom of the 1960s it underwent a radical transformation due to its expansive sandy beach and soon developed a full resort infrastructure. Recently the beachfront area of the resort has benefitted from a highly successful make-over, featuring an attractive palm-strewn esplanade.
The Algarve
The Algarve has long been famous for its mild winter temperatures, sandy beaches and picturesque fishing communities. Formerly an independent kingdom within the medieval Iberian Moorish empire, its traditional architecture and tilework still manifest influences from that time, as do the many orange, lemon, olive and almond groves that exist due to the Moors introduction of these trees to the region. The former Moorish regional capital of Silves lies within easy reach of Armação de Pêra, as do the unspoilt Monchique mountains and the picture postcard village of Alte.

Loulé Market (half day) – An ancient hill town converted by the Moors into a significant stronghold, Loulé has been home to the region’s major market for centuries and offers a picturesque window into the rural life of the Algarve. A centre for regional handicrafts and artisanship, it is also a great place to shop for characterful gifts and souvenirs.
Silves & Monchique (full day) – As Xelb, a fortified riverside port, Silves was the capital of the Moorish Algarve, and retains much pungently historic ambience to this day, with a castle, cathedral, and many narrow streets to explore. By way of complete contrast, the Monchique Mountains offer scenic splendour and a rewarding glimpse of life in the Algarve’s hinterlands.
Historic Faro & Timeless Tavira (full day) – The atmospheric walled Old Town of Faro features a number of attractive historic buildings with the interiors of the cathedral and São Francisco church especially noteworthy. The frozen-in-time fishing port of Tavira meanwhile presents a wonderful ensemble of traditional Portuguese architecture in a delightful riverside setting and offers a delightful opportunity for a serendipitous meander.
