S'Algar

S’Algar is a purpose built coastal resort comprising two hotels, a number of apartment and villa complexes, an attractive lido, a wide variety of sports facilities and a few bars, shops and restaurants. It is the starting point for a couple of enjoyable country strolls and is linked to the island’s nearby capital Mahón by a public bus service (20 minutes). Fun events worth attending in Mahón are the weekly market and the Saturday night trotting races. These take place in a stadium between S’Algar and Mahón and are a colourful local form of pony & trap racing.

Menorca

Menorca is a delightfully tranquil island with some beautiful scenery, wonderful prehistoric monuments and two historically significant cities, Ciutadella and Mahón. The locations of these two fascinating cities point to a further feature that defines the island, its magnificent natural harbours. Closer to mainland Spain and the other Balearic Islands, Ciutadella harbour proved more than ample for medieval fleets, and the city consequently evolved as the island’s first capital. When the British Empire however decided, in the 18th century, to base its entire Mediterranean fleet in Menorca they moved the island’s capital to Mahón, on the other side of the island, home to the world’s second largest and second deepest natural harbour. Consequently, central Ciutadella presents a warren of medieval alleyways lined with historic buildings whilst Mahón feels far more modern and British influenced. Away from these two cities and a few resorts, the remainder of the island is largely sparsely populated and unspoilt, hence its designation by UNESCO in 1993 as a biosphere reserve.

Optional Excursion Possibilities

Mahon Medley & Harbour Cruise (full day): A harbour cruise and gin distillery visit in the island's capital are combined with a brief stop at the prehistoric Trepuco ruins and an ascent to the island's highest point to enjoy spectacular 360° panoramic views that on a clear day take in the entire island.

Medieval Horse Play & More (full day): Explore the intriguing medieval alleyways of ancient Ciutadella prior to watching local breed horses train for show performances and spending time at leisure in the scenic sandy bay and modern full facility tourist resort of Cala Galdana.

A Flutter On The Ponies Perhaps? (evening): An early evening jaunt to take in the local trotting races, assess the form of the local nags and jockeys, and perhaps lay down a modest little bet or two.
