As one of the preferred resorts of the Habsburg Empire, Opatija exhibits significant Austro-Hungarian influence, in particular in its architecture, cake shops, and chocolatiers. Istria meanwhile is highly influenced in many ways by Italy, which it faces over the Adriatic. Must-see sights included within this itinerary are the wonderfully well preserved Roman ruins of Pula, the 6th century Euphrasian Basilica of Porec, the idyllic historic community of Rovinj, the astoundingly beautiful Plitvice Lakes, and the impressive imperial resort of Opatija. Tranquil and entirely natural Moscenicka Draga meanwhile will touch your heart.
Opatija & The Habsburg Riviera – The Habsburgian imperial resort of Opatija sprung up in the late 19th century around a single aristocratic villa. A railhead linked the resort with the major cities of the empire and well-known architects and landscapers of the day constructed its magnificent hotels, villas, and parks.
Historic Istria – A fascinating day-long exploration of this formerly Italian speaking area of Croatia includes visits to the remarkably well-preserved Roman monuments of Pula, the ancient Euphrasian Basilica of Porec (containing some spellbindingly beautiful Byzantine mosaics), and the picture postcard peninsular city of Rovinj, which is a total delight to explore and while away time in.
The Plitvice Lakes – The Plitvice Lakes, numbering 16 in total, are such a wondrous and unique scenic phenomenon that they are listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site (as is the Euphrasian Basilica mentioned above). Highly picturesque, and characterised by crystal clear waters, they are the result of a confluence of several overground and underground rivers and are all linked together in a single chain by a fascinating and multifarious array of rivulets, waterfalls and cascades.
