Calpe

Calpe is a delightfully genteel and spacious resort offering an extremely amiable and low key ambience whilst at the same time presenting a full array of facilities. The resort area of the town is skirted by a beautiful beachfront promenade featuring a wide variety of bars and restaurants whilst the ancient, formerly fortified hilltop area houses a maze of enticing alleyways and small squares. Clearly visible for miles around, Calpe’s huge iconic Gibraltarian rock bisects its beach area, provides shelter for its port and connects directly to its old town, providing Calpe with both its backbone and an emblematic focal point.

The Costa Blanca

The name given to this area of Spain, the 'White Coast', or Costa Blanca, derives from its brilliant sunshine, which reflects as white light from the region's many vast sandy beaches. The Costa Blanca phenomenon, its rapid development and surge in popularity, began during the nineteen-sixties, when it became firmly established in the British popular imagination as 'the' place to escape to during the cold, wet and windy British winters. Many frequent winter visitors eventually stayed on, as a result of which English is widely spoken and a substantial ex-patriot community has formed.

Optional Excursion Possibilities

Valencia (must be pre-booked): Valencia is Spain’s third largest city and capital of the region of the same name. Founded in Roman times it became an extremely important city during the Moorish occupation of Spain when it was home to the famous warrior El Cid. In addition to many historical buildings of note it also contains some wonderful ultra-modern architecture conceived by the Valencian internationally renowned architect, Santiago Calatrava.

Guadalest: Enjoy a scenic drive high up into the majestic Aitana Mountains to visit the former Moorish kingdom of Guadalest. Its clifftop castle dates back as far as the 12th century and is dramatically approached by a single gateway cut into the rock of the mountain on which it stands. Within Guadalest a number of interesting museums can be visited, including the ancestral home of the town’s leading family, a miniatures museum, a doll museum, a museum dedicated to the work of sculptor Ribera Girona and a museum of medieval torture.

Altea: Altea lies in a picturesque bay of the same name and enjoys a magnificent mountain backdrop. Originally a Roman settlement it faded from significance over the centuries and was a rather sleepy though nonetheless attractive fishing village when discovered and restored by a group of artists in the 1950s. Since then its enchanting alleys and colourful art galleries have attracted thousands of visitors.
